Join us for Figment San Diego 2017

Figment San Diego 2017 is on! Our event this year will be held on May 13, 2017, at Chicano Park, from 10 am to 6 pm.

Figment is a free, all ages participatory arts event. Figment is now a global event, taking place in multiple cities, including San Diego, after its initial start in NYC in 2007 on Governor's Island. Our event this year is on May 13th, and will take place at Chicano Park in Barrio Logan, an historic site with a rich history of building community through art all on its own.
Figment seeks to bring participatory art and culture to the community of San Diego, and in doing so, build community through the practice of participatory art. Using participatory art as a bridge to cross cultural divides, we seek to encourage everyone to create art and rub shoulders with people they might not necessarily rub shoulders with in their day to day life. By creating this bridge, a greater understanding of community can thrive and grow. Something which is much needed, not only in our current time, but ALL the time.
The conversations and friendships that get started at Figment are an outgrowth of what happens when people share paint and paintbrushes with other people they don't even know, painting on a community mural, or learning how to hula hoop, or experiencing the magic of a giant kaleidoscope or an electronic, talking giraffe. Those stories become shared stories, and the memories created by engaging in that type of experience will last forever. It is our greatest joy to see that those shared memories become a way to dissolve the divide so often felt in communities globally.

Join Us For Figment San Diego 2015!!

Saturday, June 27th, 2015 • Chicano Park
10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Founded in 2007 on New York City’s Governors Island, what began as a few thousand enthusiasts enjoying a handful of participatory art projects on a sunny July afternoon has ballooned into a multi-day, multi-city event that drew over 30,000 participants in NYC, Boston, Jackson, MS and Detroit in 2011. In 2015, FIGMENT seeks to continue its mission to offer free, inclusive and participatory art to entire communities, removing the barriers of museum and gallery walls and entrance fees and blurring the lines between those who create and those who enjoy art.

FIGMENT embodies the belief that everyone can make something of artistic value and that the arts can build a community of our best selves. We’re looking for artists who embrace those ideals to help us continue FIGMENT in its San Diego setting.

FIGMENT San Diego will take place in the historic Chicano Park, located in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego. The park’s peaceful, grassy landscape is shaded throughout by the flowing canopies of trees provided by nature, and the proud stance of the freeway’s painted pillars contributed by the community. Chicano Park is the US’s largest outdoor mural collection brought about by the extensive history of the neighborhood. What better place to merge public arts that speak from the past with the interactive art of today.

The 3rd FIGMENT San Diego is a one-day event designed to promote spontaneous collaboration, active communication, and significant fun. Scheduled artists will commingle with contributors bringing unplanned commissions to the site.
